What this tool does
Headaches come in several forms, and the type you have shapes what will actually help. This tool looks at what your headache feels like, where it sits, how long it lasts and what seems to set it off, then suggests which type is most likely and what usually eases it.
It is a starting point for people who want a clearer idea of what they are dealing with before booking a GP appointment or trying yet another painkiller. It is not a diagnosis, but it should give you a more informed view than guessing.
Who it is for
Use it if you get headaches regularly and are not sure whether they are tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, sinus headaches or something brought on by taking painkillers too often. It is also worth a try if your headaches have changed recently, or if the usual shop bought remedies no longer seem to touch them.
Please do not use it in place of urgent medical advice. If your headache came on suddenly and severely, followed a head injury, or comes with a stiff neck, rash, confusion, weakness or vision loss, contact NHS 111 or A and E rather than filling in a form.
How it works
You answer a short set of questions about your symptoms, the timing and pattern, common triggers and any medication you are taking. The tool then gives you a plain English summary of the most likely headache type, what tends to help that particular type, and signs that suggest you should speak to your GP. Your answers are not saved or shared, so you can be honest without worrying about a record being kept.
