If you have ever bumped your head and been left with a lingering headache and perhaps some light bruising and a bump then you know how just how sensitive the head is to injury. Some head injuries, however, can be severe and recovery may be much more complicated. In fact, head injuries may not always leave a person with obvious structural abnormalities but the effects can still be crippling.

After Head Injuries

Headaches may sometimes persist for many months or years. Even a direct blow to the head and skull does not necessarily result in a headache immediately afterwards, which can mean a postponed to the doctor and further complications from delayed treatment.

Headaches following a head injury may be mild, moderate or severe and the extent of the injury itself is not always indicative of the severity of headaches. Mild headaches following a head injury are those that usually don't prevent a person from functioning daily. These types of headaches tend to respond to over-the-counter pain medications as well as general relaxation techniques. Although you may need to take medication regularly to prevent their return, they usually absolve after a few weeks to several months. Moderate headaches may show some improvement with treatment similar to that used for mild headaches, but they still remain albeit to a less painful degree. You may experience some relief from medication but not enough to completely eliminate the headaches.

With severe headaches, you are probably unable to function at work, school or in any normal capacity. Common headache medications don't alleviate the pain and no amount of immediate therapeutic attention provides any substantial relief. Severe headaches are truly disabling as they prevent a person from participating in social activities and functioning in normal daily life.

Concussions

A mild brain injury is usually classed as a concussion. When a concussion occurs, there is a disruption in normal brain functioning that may occur in conjunction with cognitive confusion and fainting. Some of the imaging tests commonly used following head injury doesn’t always show any major abnormalities although undetected nerve problems from the injury may still cause chronic headaches and pain. Any headaches that collectively exist for an extended length of time are typically referred to as post-concussion headaches.

Headaches and Bleeding

If you have suffered from a brain injury and find that your headaches are becoming more severe, it is important that you see your doctor and explain all of your symptoms. You may have bleeding in the brain that can be slow in exhibiting obvious symptoms. Sometimes a headache is the only indication of serious bleeding and you should obtain prompt medical treatment.

Treating Headaches After Brain Injury

One of the unfortunate realities for people who suffer from headaches following a head injury is that they will probably experience other symptoms related to the injury, which then complicates treatment. Dizziness, sensory problems, depression, paranoia and sleep disorders are common complaints from those who have suffered a head injury. Treatment tends to focus on the symptoms rather than a root cause because there is usually no 'cure' for brain injuries. Anti-depressants are often effective for treating pain and any accompanying depression or anxiety.

Your Lifestyle

Eliminating stimulants such as coffee and cigarettes is advised and avoiding substances such as alcohol can be helpful in preventing headaches after a head injury. Although many people suffer from sleep disorders following a head injury, try to get as much rest as possible. Exercise may be beneficial, even if it's just a simple brisk walk outside for ten minutes. Keep a strong support network if you can and be sure to alert your boss or any colleagues at work regarding your head injury and any headaches you are experiencing.

If you are open and maintain communication, your work can hopefully be accommodating to any special needs you may have. Most people who suffer from headaches after a brain injury will experience relief within several months to a year and for those who suffer from persistent headaches, treatments can make head pain more manageable.

I was in a taxi 2 nights ago, happily talking away when all is sudden he broke sharply which meant I went flying forward and hit my head against the folded seats in front of me, perhaps a meter away... I hit the upper right eye/eyebrow/forehead region and cut my the bridge of my nose... I now have a black eye coming through with the whole region of impact still very tender, I have had pains and a mild headache since, alongside neck pain in my right side too.... I reckon the taxi was travelling around 15 to 20 miles at the time of breaking. Should I seek medical advise?

Got hit on the head with a glass about 8 hours ago did see spots before my eyes and did feel sick and funny have been worried ever since and fretting about it

My 9 year old daughter got banged very hard on a concrete wall near her right temple, a few months back as she was dizzy. She cried so loudly which was very unlikely of her. It was so painful that she didn't me apply an ice pack. So, I gave cold water compression very lightly to it with much difficulty. But there was no bulge or swelling. But she used to complain of severe headache in betweens esp at night after that and was was not able to sleep on that side. Yesterday night, she again got a terrible headache. Pl advised me as I couldn't take her to a doctor. I'm recovering from an ankle ligament tear & dislocation.

@Kk - I would. Obviously, it's going to be an impact, but if it doesn't subside it's always good to get stuff checked out especially your jaw, it could be cracked. I'm sure you will be OK, but better to be safe.

I was punched in my eye 2 days ago and now i have a headache that will not go away and im experiencing nausea,numbness in parts of my face, blurred vision and my jaw hurts also. Should I see a doctor?

I hit my head about 3 months ago. It hurt but I'm someone who has a high pain threshold and tend to "walk things off". However, after 2weeks and my neck still was a little achy. I went to urgent care and they decided I had a sprained neck. I was sent off with some muscle relaxers and that was that. Flash forward and my neck is still hurting and sometimes I feel like the back of my head, in the area that I hit it, aches like a headache. Any thoughts? I do not have a GP so not quite sure if I should worry or just allow myself more time to heal.

I got hit in the head yesterday evening with a glass jar full of spaghetti sauce from the top shelf in my pantry. It hit me right above my left ear there is a knot and bruising and I can’t touch it or my hair on that side. I have also had a persistent headache ever since. What should I do?

I got hit in the forehead quite hard and have had a mild headache since, there is a gumball size lump there and the bruising yellow and green has come down around my eyes a week later I have what I think is called an ice pick headache in the back of my head and I'm very concerned bc tonight my headache was extreme accompanied by nausea and very dry mouth should I try to go to sleep or be more concerned?

I had treatment over two weeks ago on the the back of my head after hitting it on edge of the bath . I had a 8cm split to my head and 6 stapes to close it .why do I still have a very sensitive lump on my head , hope you can help me thank you

I hit the top of my head on a concrete sign 3 days ago got stitches for a 2inch laceration. It gave me a headache and is getting worse. Tried tylonal and excedrin nothing takes it away. Went back to the workers comp doctor today told him he shined a light in my eyes and said i dont see no nerve damage your ok and gave me naproxin sent me on my way with no other check. Headache is getting worse. Dont know if i should see someone else for a mri and what will workers comp do.

Yesterday evening at work a small sign fell on my face, leaving me with two cuts. One on the top of my nose and the other under my left eye. Other than it stinging, I felt fine. However, the next morning I woke up with a huge headache, dizziness, and nausea. Should I get checked out by a doctor?

I had a band to my head three weeks ago and have had a headache night and day since on the right side of me head, I was hit on the left side, I had a CT scan done and the Dr said it showed no bleed but that my brain prob hit the right side dye to the force I was hit at, I am having pain on moving my head as well as the constant pain, this is quite severe, is this a sign that there is something else going on

About a month ago, while I was at work I fell from a 10 foot ladder. I was taken to the hospital and had a the tests and xrays but a little over a week ago I started having these headaches that will wake me up at night, I sometimes feel dizzy and sick to my stomach. Should I be worried.

Hi I had a fall on Saturday 16th December 2017 and hit my head and was knocked out I have two black eyes and my nose is broke I did go the hospital and got checked but now I’m having headaches and I feel sick and feel like I’m in a daze is this normal thanks gill

Hi. So I had something fall on my head about 4 months ago. I was left with a nasty cut and bits of spiky hair where the unpack had cut my hair off. I didn't quite pass out. I went to the hospital, they cleaned me up and glued my cut back together. I had 3 weeks off work with post concussion syndrome. Since then though I have a constant head ache. And my head is so tender all over. My boyfriend went to give me a cuddle and his shoulder tapped my head and the pain was ridiculous I was nearly crying. Is this normal?. I should add I did go back to the hospital about a week after it had happened as I was feeling so bad. They said that was normal and send me on my way.

I fell on my head a month ago and had small bleeding, went to the doctor and there was no brain injury or skull damage. There was no headache back than, but now, I start to get light pain on the spot where I fell. I would be thankful for comments

I hit my head falling down a flight of stairs about four days ago, I believe I knocked myself out in the fall as I do not remember it but was told about it. The next day I was very nauseated and had a mild head ache. However the day after that I had a more severe head ache and an odd tingling sensation on the right hand side of my scalp when I touched it. The headache and the tingling sensation have not gone yet, do I need urgent medical help or am i ok?

I was playing ball with my dog and as I bent down his head came up. I was hit square in the tip of my nose. I was bleeding and all I saw for a second was black. I sat for a few minutes as blood poured out of my nose. I have very very slight bruising and swelling. Like barely. My dog has a big head. I do not notice any problems with my nose but I have had this terrible awful headache in my face and my head. My eyes hurt and I am almost crazy with the pain. I dont want to go to the Doctor and look crazy. Any suggestions?

@FF Vertigo usually results from a sudden or temporary change in the activity of the balance sensors in the inner ear or in the balance sensors’ connections to the brain, both of which detect movement and changes in your head position. Vertigo can occur after a fall. If your symptoms haven't cleared up is known as post-concussion syndrome. Symptoms include:
headaches, dizziness, problems with memory or concentration, unsteadiness, depression, anxiety and changes in behaviour. The fact you have had scans and nothing has been found is positive. But you still need to visit your doc frequently if the symptoms persist and your doc will refer you back to a specialist. Hope it clears up for you soon.

I fell to the ground and hit my head 4 months ago. After that I had a severe headache and dizziness.

Now I'm still experiencing dizziness when I try to sleep over the left side of my head.

I also wake up very dizzy.

I went to the doc and made some scans, but nothing was wrong.

Is it normal to still experience this headaches and dizziness? I'm very worried to be honest.

I fell backwards 2 weeks ago and hit my head on the pavement, initially it dud hurt and I had a headache the next day. I was on holiday at the time so didn't think too much of it.

Since then I've had trouble with my sleeping and I wake up with pains in the back of my head, I do feel irritable but have put that down to lack of sleep. As I'm still here I don't believe it's anything serious but the pain I have in the mornings when I wake up are very unpleasant.

I've not taken anything nor seen a doctor. But thinking maybe I should?

I had hit ny head on a table and got a headache and it was getting worse so i went home, in the car i had passes out and my mom drove me to the hospital my words began to become slurred but the doctor just gave me a prescription and sent me home later i began having severe headaches so my mom scheduled an appointment at a clinic were they said i had a concussion so i scheduled an appointment for a concussion doctor where they took an impact test and said i in fact do have a concussion..he had warned my mom that if it got worse i had to go to a neurologist..2 days later i passes out and hit my head again and i had the worst headache then the next day i passed out again and hit my head again when i woke up o couldnt hear anything and my headaches got worse then my checkup came around 3 days later and i told them what had happened and they referred me to a neurologist where they found out that i had icp (inter cranial pressure) and they had to drill a hole in my skull and insert some tube thing to monitor icp..never take a head injury lightly

A week ago, i banged my head on a steam pipe on my top left crown. I still get headaches, but now they're on the right side near the temple and top, has a dull pressure feel. It also radiates to my neck...The thing is that I'm leaving the country tomorrow and i cant see a doctor at all. Also tylenol helps a little bit for a few hours, but i wake up with nausea, then it goes away. I don't know if that's related to stress or the injury itself since i suffer from anxiety a lot

I was running accross my bed 3 days ago and completely "brain farted" that my ceiling fan was on. I ended up breaking a fan blade off with my forehead. I don't remember leaving my room but it bled pretty good for a few minutes. Eye brow to eye brow to hair line is swollen and my headaches are getting worse (absolutely intense) especially when I bend over or walk around, not to mention slight to moderate dizziness. Love being a happening waiting to accident!!!

Tripped over my grandsons makeshift bed whilst on holiday and banged my head against bedside cabinet. Trip to hospital and some tests later I was sent home with no scan, although I have no memory of the accident taking place. My head still hurts and I am taking prescribed Codeine tablets for pain relief. Should I have been scanned?

i have bumped my head hard quiet a lot since am anemic and usually pass out or blackout. But recently I have started feeling some pains over my right eyebrow and my head as a whole and it gets worst anytime I bend over to pick something up, I hope you guys can try and help me find a home medication since I can’t afford to go the hospital to get professional help.

My had injury; resulted in 6 stitches along my hair line and bruising across my eyes and down my cheek and jaw, lasting weeks. I blacked out and vomitted. No CT scan or x-Ray was taken by hospital. 2 months since I am suffering cold sensations like water dripping down my head, headaches, throbbing, numbness on my scalp and areas that way from the wound site, but are very tender. The wound has been infected, but I can't understand the sensations of pain 5 cm along from the wound towards the crown of my head. Could it be an internal injury not picked up as no scans taken?

I was bumped by a car 5 days ago I fell and hit my head. I have a scratch and bruise. I had a hair clasp on it shattered causing the scratch. There was very little bleeding. Minor headach that evening but today I got up and felt dizzy. Is this normal

I hit my forehead on a doorjam three weeks ago. I hit it so hard you could hear the clunk three rooms away and literally saw stars. Afterwards I had a dent where I hit it and the next day a bruise. It's been three weeks and my forehead still hurts to the touch even doing a simple thing like putting moisturizer on and I have a headache every day. I'm thinking of going to the er tomorrow. I don't think I should still have pain there and the headaches are unbearable. I talked to a nurse and she said I could have a brain bleed or a fracture. I'm afraid to find out. Any comments would be appreciated.

You should always get checked out by your GP in cases where there may have been possible concussion or if you have any continued symptoms after a bang to the head or fall.

I hit my head 6 days ago. And that same day after I hit it I felt totally fine but the following day woke up with a mild headache and dizziness and have had it off and on up until now. Should I give it more time and see if it goes away or go see a doctor soon? Thanks!

i received a blunt force to the upper back part of my head by a thick square piece of wood leaning against the wall which fell on my head while I was sitting down and at the time my head really hurt for a few minutes and had a lump but no evident damage. It's now been two weeks since the incident and at first I got twinges and mild headaches at the lower back of my head but now for the past few days I keep getting uncomfortable pain above my eye on my forehead. Could this be related and should I go to a doctor? Thanks.

I had a pot fall on my head two days ago and I am suffering from mild sinus headaches. The bump is gone and the cut is healed but still have a mild sinus headache.

I have accident and my head bangs on the cement( back of the head) it is almost 1yr after the accident but until now it keeps on hurting and feel pressure in my head the affect the veins of my body that keeps me worry, all the laboratory results was negative and the doctor told that is inflammatory of my nerves and give pain reliever please help me cause I am worried whats happening

I'm a 33 year old female. I hit my head on a kitchen cabinet door edge hard 9 days ago, and have been experiencing a mild tension headache since. It's getting annoying. I didn't have any LOC, vomiting, or any signs of CSF leakage when it happened so I didn't go to the hospital. I did have an outward lump on my head, which has since went down and my scalp is better. My in-laws were also coming in from out of town, & I didn't want to go to the E.R. So I just brushed it off & figured I'd feel better in a few days. Now it's 9 days later and I still have a mild headache. If this doesn't clear in a few more days, guess I'm headed to the doctor soon.

I got knocked unconcious while playing afl football,was flown to perth and woke up 2 days later.deveoped pta (post trumatic amensia).this happened in may 2012 8 months ago and still get headaches.have good and bad days,they were coming from the back of my head but now seem to coming from all around head.have been getting constant help and had a ct scan 2 days ago.which iam going to doctors to view results in week or so.headached seem to always be there just intensey is differnt from day to day.just have to keep positive and stay healthy

I was recently rear ended while we were at a stop sign; I remember most that I was talking and all of a sudden my teeth clicked as they shut forcefully. I also was stunned but aware of a motion of my head and upper body and the realization that I hit my head on the head rest which propelled it forward then back again. Although I was stunned, didn't know what hit me sort of feeling, I thought I would be ok in a bit of time. It was Christmas Eve when the accident occured, and today is the 20th of January; I've had non stop pains in my head which occur all over, randomly without warning. I thought they were going away but they returned fortrhwith and have never stopped. The pain is from a different area at any given moment. I dont know if and when it will go away but assumed it was from a concussion and wouldn't last this long. All the while I felt somethign was askew, not right. I had fibromyalgia and crippling of my hands some years ago which the accident also brought back immediately. I've been in somatic pain ever since the accident. No matter what I do helps, and I am on low dosage of morphine sulphate for neuropathic pain; even that doesn't help this head pain. I am not sure what to do but know that there is a chacne that bleeding might be present so I ought to get an MRI. I am afraid, however. We'll see how it isin a few weeks. Right now if I even think too hard it causes me much pain.
